It’s About Time

These include numerous previously unpublished photographs as well as key works that are being shown together in this compilation for the first time. Ahead of its official release in November, the photobook *It’s About Time* will be presented and available for purchase at the CAMERA WORK Gallery.

Editing this work — from film shot in the ’90s right up to the present day — gave me a profound sense of reflection and a deeper understanding of why photography matters: not a single moment in our lives ever presents itself again. My love of photography not only continues; it has become all the stronger. – Russell James

The exhibition spans from the early years of analogue photography to recent works created using digital technologies. Despite varying conditions, the works on display are united by a consistent photographic conviction: to reproduce what is seen as directly and unadulteratedly as possible. The exhibition thus takes the viewer through various genres of photography, including nudes, portraits and landscapes. By bringing together

works spanning three decades, the exhibition highlights both the development and the continuity of Russell James’s artistic vision. In 2027, the Western Australian Museum in Perth will present a retrospective of his photographic career.

Russell James (born in Perth in 1962) is one of the world’s leading contemporary fashion and nude photographers. The Australian-born artist led an eventful life as a police officer in a special unit and as a fashion model before achieving his international breakthrough as a photographer in New York in the late 1990s. In the years that followed, he established himself on the international art market as an artist who combines the classical aesthetics of late 20th-century fashion photography with contemporary elements and

a distinctive stylistic approach. As such, he is regarded on the art market as a photographer who has further developed the work of artists such as Herb Ritts and Patrick Demarchelier and has had a decisive influence on supermodel photography in the 21st century. His photographic works also reflect the culture of his native Australia.

Landscapes, settings and carefully chosen lighting conditions contribute to the artist’s distinctive style. James’s works are held in internationally renowned art collections

. Russell James is also known for his art project entitled ‘Nomad Two Worlds’ – an art series inspired by the global implications of the encounter between different cultures. Launched in New York in 2009 and supported by Donna Karan, Hugh Jackman and the Australian government, the series has since been exhibited in collaboration with CAMERA WORK in Berlin and at the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia, amongst other venues.
