the landowner and hypochondriac Lomov visits his neighbour Natalia Stepanovna – with a clear aim: he wants to ask for her hand in marriage. But instead of romantic feelings, a heated argument breaks out between the two of them and Natalia’s father. In the end, the question arises: is this marriage based on love at all – or simply because it is the done thing?

The audience follows several characters as they make their way through the Oktoberfest. In the hustle and bustle of the boisterous beer festival, class divisions seem to dissolve – at least for the duration of a beer-fuelled high. But perhaps that is precisely when they become all the more apparent. After all, who pays for the ecstasy – and who pays for the social order? And how does this social order affect human relationships?
