The court case concerning a broken jug conceals another offence: an influential man has harassed a young woman. Will Eve dare to accuse the perpetrator and thereby exonerate her fiancé, Ruprecht? For he faces military service in distant lands, and Hans Albers sings evocatively: ‘Near Rocktown he’s long since in his grave / and flowers are growing out of his bones’. The web of lies and the abuse of power become increasingly transparent as the show progresses. Can justice prevail in the end?

In her ‘classic in the box’ series, Bridge Markland skilfully weaves together faithful lines from the original text and pop music references, whilst simultaneously subverting established gender roles. In doing so, she shifts rapidly between performance, puppetry and lip-syncing to well-known pop songs and film music classics, breathing new life into the classical material for a wide audience.

Bridge Markland

The Berlin-based performer Bridge Markland is a virtuoso of role-play and transformation.

With brilliant ease, she transcends the boundaries between popular and high culture, dance, theatre, cabaret, gender performance, children’s theatre and puppetry. Bridge Markland has been performing on stage since 1985 and has toured with her diverse productions throughout Berlin, Germany, Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia. Bridge performs solo or with other companies.

In 2005, Bridge Markland launched her very own personal declaration of love for classical theatre material and pop music. The series takes its name from the large box from which she conjures up her one-woman-plus-puppets fully-playback shows. With a remarkable talent for transformation, she rapidly plays all the roles – sometimes as a human, sometimes as a puppet – abridging texts and either reinforcing or contrasting them with appropriately chosen pop music.
