Old Melodies – New Songs

It all begins with a very old story. A boy visits his grandad, who tells him stories. Sometimes Grandad even falls asleep whilst telling them. There’s one story, however, that Peter loves above all others, and whenever Grandad dozes off again, Peter can go out onto the meadow at the edge of the woods. Grandad always warns him against this, because the wolf might come out of the woods.

First, the children get to guess which musical motif represents which character in the story. Naturally, they throw themselves into it with great enthusiasm and are delighted when they guess correctly. They also get to have a say in what should happen to the captured wolf at the end.

A city-dwelling child, a grandfather and a grey wolf. A little dance in the shadows. Peter is already 10 and has, basically, got the hang of it all. The hungry wolf comes along just at the right time. The shadows, the music and Christian Zebisch bring the old story to life. The screen serves as both stage and backdrop. The characters are reflected in the performer. He feels the wolf’s hunger, waddles off for a relaxing dip, wants to protect Peter as his grandfather, and intones the hunters’ fearsome hunting song with vocals, accordion and a mini drum kit.
