The Quatuor Ébène’s journey through the world of Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets is drawing to a close. The final stop: the ‘Great Fugue’, which the composer originally wrote as the closing movement for his Opus 130.

Beethoven’s contemporaries were so overwhelmed by the power of this music that he wrote a new finale and published the fugue separately.

Quatuor Ébène now presents the Quartet Op. 130 in its original form – with the avant-garde ‘Great Fugue’ as the highlight. The programme opens with the first ‘Razumovsky Quartet’, a work from Beethoven’s middle period that impresses with its symphonic expressiveness and grandeur.
