On the Trail of a Secret Police Force
For almost four decades, the GDR’s Ministry for State Security organised the surveillance and persecution of people from its headquarters in Lichtenberg. With its distinctive buildings and open spaces, this historic site documents the Stasi’s gradual development into one of the world’s largest state surveillance and repression apparatuses.
Since 2022, further parts of the former headquarters have been listed as historic monuments. Even 36 years after the Stasi was dissolved, the site and its buildings have not yet fully found their place within Berlin’s urban landscape.
To mark Open Monuments Day, the organisers of the ‘Stasi Headquarters: Campus for Democracy’ invite visitors to explore the site.
