Sebastiano Ricci’s *Bathsheba at Her Bath* has, since its acquisition by Frederick II, been referred to by a succession of secular titles such as *After the Bath* or even *Venus at Her Toilet*.

However, various previously overlooked details in the painting suggest that the biblical theme must have meant far more to the painter than merely a welcome pretext for a seductive female nude in the style of Veronese.

The interdisciplinary series of events ‘Christian Art Appreciation’ usually takes place once a month – except during the summer break – and is a collaboration between the St. Matthäus Foundation and the Gemäldegalerie of the Berlin State Museums.
In line with the liturgical calendar, selected works of art are discussed by an art historian and a theologian and opened up for discussion.
