SANKOFA – THREADS OF MEMORY is an interdisciplinary performance and research project by Helen Schwochert and Brenda Akele Jorde, as well as the first production by their company, Zwischen Seilen und Sein. This contemporary circus piece explores the culture of memory and colonial continuities between Germany and Ghana.
Starting with the question “Who remembers what—and who is forgotten?” SANKOFA explores how memory is formed and which stories remain visible. At its core is a versatile multisilks prop that serves as both a set piece and a metaphor for a pluralistic culture of remembrance.
Blending acrobatics, theater, and visual poetry, the production creates images that invite reflection on personal and societal memory.
Poetic, humorous, and thought-provoking, SANKOFA invites us to understand memory as a shared social responsibility.
