NOUS – Miroir

NOUS is the Berlin-based duo consisting of singer Marie Séférian and pianist Henning Schmiedt.

Their diverse backgrounds and musical influences blend to create a unique musical language that bridges jazz, chanson, improvised music, and atmospheric soundscapes.

With *Miroir*, NOUS releases its second album following the debut *Je Suis*. The starting point for the project was *Hoffmanniana*, Andrei Tarkovsky’s unfilmed screenplay about E. T. A. Hoffmann. Both musicians read the script and then entered the studio without any compositions or set arrangements. From the images, moods, and memories that the text had evoked in them, the music for an imaginary film emerged through free improvisation.

Tarkovsky’s poetic imagery and E. T. A. Hoffmann’s imagination form the resonant space for *Miroir*. As in their works, atmosphere, silence, and the unspoken take center stage here as well. The music does not tell stories in the classical sense—it opens up spaces in which listeners can discover their own associations.

Slowness, timbres, and the power of reduction shape the character of the album. Every note is given time to take effect; every pause becomes part of the composition. The result is music that poses questions rather than providing answers—quiet, open, and intense.
