Jigaraki is a concert by the Berlin-based trio Elèni Mik, Nafsika Gkotzamani, and Hanik Soleimani. As emerging FLINTA+ artists, they create a space where diverse traditions meet experimental performance.

Placing the voice at the center, Jigaraki draws its influences from the traditions of the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia, Byzantine music, makam, and dastgah—treating these as living material to be fragmented and reinvented through contemporary composition, storytelling, and politically engaged performance.

Their concept of “fake folklore” invents a folklore that feels familiar but has never existed, using fictional rituals and multilingual texts to question authenticity, authorship, and identity. They reject both pop aesthetics and strictly preservationist approaches, instead approaching musical systems as open vocabularies of transformation and dialogue.

Inspired by Meykhane, Jigaraki creates inclusive, interactive performances that challenge its historically exclusionary nature. Jigaraki asks what contemporary folk can be beyond pop and tradition, thereby creating a new auditory language rooted equally in heritage and invention.

  • On Friday, September 18, and Saturday, September 19, performances of Hanik Soleimani and Marianna Wichas’s piece “Zai el Lila” will take place.
