This tour offers insights into the history of Stralau and shows how the peninsula evolved from a medieval fishing village into a residential neighborhood in the 1990s.
Stralau is one of Berlin’s oldest settlements. Originally, the peninsula was a small village home to eleven fishing families. Berlin acquired Stralau in 1358, and in 1464 the Stralau village church was built, which is now the oldest building in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. With the introduction of the fishing regulations in 1574, the peninsula developed into a recreational and vacation destination for Berlin’s wealthy residents.
