This year, Open Monument Day is themed “NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure” and will take place on September 12 and 13 in Berlin. The theater im delphi has put together a program to mark the occasion.

PROGRAM

12:00 & 15:30

A Look Behind the Scenes: Guided Tour of the Former Delphi Silent Film Theater

The history of this building—from a silent film theater at the end of an era to a new venue for the independent performing arts—is legendary. On an exciting guided tour led by the theater’s management, we’ll shed light on every nook and cranny of the Theater im Delphi—from the attic to the old projector room. (Accessibility note: The Theater im Delphi does not have an elevator. Therefore, the tour is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, which we deeply regret.)

1:00 p.m.

The Theater im Delphi Through the Ages: Lecture and Q&A with Nikolaus Schneider (Artistic Director & Managing Director / Co-Founder of Theater im Delphi) and Robert Stiehler (Technical Director)

Fallen into obscurity for decades, the building—originally constructed in 1929 as a silent-film theater in the film town of Weißensee—was revived as an international cultural center in 2012. But what happened behind closed doors in the meantime? How did the theater come to be founded? The theater’s management will recount its exciting history from its opening to the present day, richly illustrated and contextualized within the respective time periods. A question-and-answer session will follow.

4:30 p.m.

Between Art and Reality: Working in the Independent Arts Scene Lecture and Q&A with Nikolaus Schneider (Artistic Director & Managing Director / Co-Founder of Theater im Delphi)

This event is suitable for newcomers as well as for those looking to network within the independent arts scene—and, of course, for anyone who simply wants to learn more.

This session provides foundational knowledge: How does a venue like Theater im Delphi actually function as cultural infrastructure? And what does “cultural infrastructure” even mean in Berlin? How do artists, technical staff, production teams, and audiences work together? Fundamental questions will also be addressed: Why are venues like Theater im Delphi important? What networks does the independent arts scene need?

Exciting questions and discussions!
