JJJJJerome Ellis

Ellis speaks with a glottal block stutter, which manifests as involuntary pauses while speaking. In Ellis’s artistic practice, this stuttering becomes compositional material: pauses, repetitions, and extended intervals disrupt linearity, rearrange time, and open up spaces for a different, attentive way of listening.

In performances, soundscapes, texts, and improvisations, Ellis draws on traditions such as free jazz, modern composition, musique concrète, gospel, and environmental music. Saxophone, organ, dulcimer, electronics, and voice coalesce into explorations of Blackness, stuttered speech, time, and nature.

For the Haus am Waldsee, Ellis is developing a musical performance that unfolds between the garden and the interior spaces. The plants, movements, and acoustic conditions of the site become part of an open composition that navigates the tension between sound and silence, presence and interruption.
