From History to the Present—Places of Historical and Political Education in Treptow-Köpenick
The human rights organization Memorial leads visitors through the grounds, deliberately breaking with the pompous staging of a triumph that overshadows the memory of the thousands of dead buried here.

The grounds of this cemetery serve as a setting to explore different phases of private and state-sanctioned remembrance in the Soviet and post-Soviet spheres. The political and historical context of the period in which the cemetery was established is discussed, as is the current instrumentalization of this site in the ongoing war against Ukraine.
Participants will learn why the Stalin quotations at this site have endured—unlike in the Soviet Union—and why they continue to be “presented” to the public without commentary to this day. The tour is designed to be interactive—participants can share and discuss their own interpretations of the site.
