Leon Locher and Detlev Schneider, artists from two different generations, are talking with Rose Beermann this afternoon about the question of what kind of freedom is necessary for artistic work.

Starting from specific spatial conditions—such as the design of living, working, and performance spaces—they discuss ideas of freedom: Under what conditions do we perceive freedom at certain moments—and why? What restrictions existed 20 years ago, and what restrictions exist today? In what ways do these restrictions hinder artistic work, and in what ways might they even become productive? At a time when artists and cultural practitioners in Berlin are under enormous pressure due to drastic budget cuts and the radical questioning of art’s sociopolitical significance, the focus will be on learning from one another: How can we work within constraints and create spaces of freedom?

The audience is invited to participate and join the discussion.
