Public guided tour

Between 1935 and 1945, the citadel housed the Army Gas Protection Laboratories (HGL), a facility of the Army Weapons Office. They were used to develop gas protection equipment and conduct research on new types of nerve agents—such as tabun, sarin, and soman—for military purposes.

The tour of the citadel grounds focuses on this aspect of the citadel’s history, which is barely visible today and has been little researched to date.

Learn how the Wehrmacht used the citadel’s buildings and what is still known today about the Army Gas Protection Laboratories.
