The Future and Civil Society in Eastern Germany
Together with author Hendrik Bolz, the Berliner Ensemble shines a light on those who are committed to openness and democracy, thereby offering insights into a society that is far from as homogeneous as is often claimed.
To this end, they alternately invite people to the Berliner Ensemble in Berlin-Mitte or visit civil society organizations in the East.
Author Hendrik Bolz meets musician Betterov, who grew up as Manuel Bittorf in a village in Thuringia, right where the border with West Germany once ran. His father fled in 1989. His album “Große Kunst” tells the story of that escape, of home, shame, and the lingering legacy of the GDR—and of how one’s origins shape a person. Manuel Bittorf, born near Eisenach, worked in theater for several years and later studied acting at the Berlin University of the Arts. Under the name Betterov, he is one of the most successful artists on the German music scene. His 2025 album “Große Kunst” reached the Top 10 on the German album charts.
His debut novel, “Goldener Retriever,” will be published this fall.
