Through her jazz-infused interpretations, Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu imbues these songs with a crystalline magic and invites listeners on an acoustic journey through a snow-covered land at the foot of the Carpathians.
Together with the Jovanovic Trio—led by the renowned accordion virtuoso and welcome guest at our club, Dejan Jovanovic—she approaches the Christmas songs of her homeland with authenticity and freedom.
Don’t miss this very special Christmas Eve at the ufaFabrik!
Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu hails from Humulești in northern Romania and moved to Berlin in the 1990s. Her repertoire includes tango music from 1930s Bucharest as well as songs of the Roma and from various Balkan cultures. No singer of the younger generation has ever approached the tangos à la Romanesque with such authenticity and yet such freedom.
Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu has become known to a wider audience across Europe through her sensitive interpretation of the repertoire of the Romanian folk singer Maria Tănase.
Dejan Jovanović grew up in Obrenovac near Belgrade. He came to Berlin in 1999—after winning numerous accordion competitions in Serbia—to study classical accordion at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. His masterful accordion playing is highly regarded and in demand throughout Europe.
