The work “Double America” (2012) consists of two lines: in the top line, every letter of the word “AMERICA” is turned toward the wall. The second line, on the other hand, shows an exact mirror image of the correctly spelled word.
The artist describes the resulting effect as follows: “The word ‘AMERICA’ appears to cast a shadow, even though that shadow does not exactly mirror the word that casts it.”
In many of his works, Glenn Ligon challenges overly uniform images of America. His art invites viewers to engage with the country’s history and the concept of “America” as a whole.
