Play by Katherine Kressmann Taylor

Actor and director Axel Pape, whom audiences have already had the pleasure of seeing several times at the Distel, is bringing a production to the stage for which the theater will serve as a permanent Berlin venue in the future.

“I’ve never read a greater drama in so few pages. This story is masterfully crafted, with unbeatable suspense,” says Elke Heidenreich about the story of the two friends, Max and Martin, who run a business together in America until Martin returns to his native Germany in 1932.

In America, Max, who is Jewish, worries about his sister, who works as a young actress in Berlin. Meanwhile, in Germany, Martin increasingly becomes a supporter and beneficiary of the rising regime. Things come to a head, and disaster strikes. Then Max makes a surprising decision that gives the story a completely unexpected twist.

The production presents an emotional and gripping story that serves as a brilliant and timeless warning against the rise and dangers of totalitarian systems.

“Highly topical… The sold-out audience gave a standing ovation that lasted for minutes.” (Vredener Anzeiger)

“…not to be missed under any circumstances. Axel Pape and Rainer Appel shine.” (Bonner General-Anzeiger)
