Rachmaninoff, the great pianist of the early 20th century, and Widmann, one of the outstanding clarinetists of our time, are both passionate and creative composers. Both are familiar with the unique experience of performing their own works on stage—and thereby entrusting them directly to the audience.

This also involves the openness to respond creatively to reactions and criticism. For a musical idea cannot be wrong if it springs from the deepest conviction and from the heart. This attitude was not always a given in 20th-century classical music—yet it seems to be gradually regaining importance.
