What would the “New World” be without the “Old World”—and without the formative influences of Africa? Composers such as Korngold and Dvořák brought their cultural roots to North America and enriched the musical landscape there. The saxophone, originally developed in Belgium, soon became an indispensable means of expression and a melodic instrument in New Orleans jazz.

American saxophonist Steven Banks brings these diverse traditions together and builds bridges between seemingly separate worlds. He describes the cultural divides he encounters as a classical musician: “As a classical musician, I find that many of my colleagues have little knowledge of or understanding for Black culture. At the same time, many Black people from my home state of North Carolina can hardly comprehend what I do as a classical performer and composer—and why I love this music so much.”
