Berliner Philharmoniker Ensembles
Dramatic, passionate, plaintive—works in the key of C minor have a character all their own. Franz Schubert wrote his heart-wrenching C-minor string quartet movement when he was just 17 years old. Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, spent nearly 20 years refining his somber, defiant Opus 51 No. 1.
Above them both stands their great role model, Ludwig van Beethoven: Although his Quartet, Op. 59 No. 1, leads into the brighter soundscape of F major, it unfolds a musical density and expressive power that point far into the Romantic era.
In the rousing finale, Beethoven takes up a popular Russian theme—a tribute to Count Rasumovsky, who commissioned the work.
