Gustav Brecher: Conductor, Composer, Opera Innovator. A Jewish Musician’s Life Between Fame and Demise

Recognized by Richard Strauss as highly gifted, Gustav Brecher, born in 1879, conducted his first concert at the age of 18. His goal, however, was a career as an opera conductor.

After a year with Gustav Mahler at the Vienna Court Opera, he began a 20-year career as principal opera conductor in 1903, with posts in Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt.

In the fall of 1923, Brecher was appointed General Music Director of the Leipzig Opera—marking the beginning of his most significant decade, filled with groundbreaking yet controversial world premieres. In March 1933, the Nazis forced the Jewish maestro out of office. Years of isolation followed, culminating in his flight to Belgium, where his life came to an end in May 1940.

Jürgen Schebera discusses the key stages of Brecher’s life with Albrecht Dümling. Soprano Pia Davila and Linda Leine at the piano have brought along some of the composer’s early songs.
