Kurt Mühlenahaupt
On June 11, the World Cup kicks off in North America. Millions of people will be watching the stadiums, the goals, the big show. One day later, an exhibition about the exact opposite opens.
Kurt Mühlenhaupt painted what no camera seemed to deem worthy: children in backyards, the old woman at the window, the vendor at the market. People standing on the sidelines, quiet, dignified, completely at home in their own lives. Alongside these, the exhibition features images from Brandenburg: vastness, silence, the margins as landscape and as a place of longing.
“Abseits” brings both worlds together—the social margins and the geographical ones—and asks what is actually there to see when one looks away.
