The photographic archive of Fide Struck, 1932–1938

From June 5 to September 27, 2026, the Friends of the Willy Brandt House will present Fide Struck’s photographs in the exhibition “A Berlin Suitcase.” Fide Struck was a working-class photographer, an employee, and, at times, unemployed.

He photographed Berlin in the 1930s—casually, with precision, and with wit. In 1941, he packed around 3,000 negatives into a wooden suitcase that survived the war and an odyssey through postwar Germany.

In 2015, Struck’s youngest son, Thomas, opened the suitcase and began cataloging the collection.

The Willy Brandt House is now exhibiting a selection of the most striking Berlin images from Fide Struck’s body of work.

Ulrich Tukur and Eva Mattes narrate audio descriptions of twelve photographs, accessible via QR code.

To accompany the exhibition, DISTANZ Verlag is publishing the illustrated book “Overlooked – A Berlin

Suitcase – Photographs by Fide Struck 1928–1941.”

  • Exhibition: June 5 to September 27, 2026
  • Opening: Thursday, June 4, 2026 | 7:00 p.m.
