Maria Kallau
The gestures depicted appear playful, yet carry an underlying threat of shame, violence, or the need for control.
Adolescence appears here as a state of transformation, marked by heightened sensitivity. Each image becomes a fragment of a learning process: how to touch, to conform, to withdraw, or to resist.
The paintings capture an unstable moment in which impulse and consequence are just beginning to recognize one another, and identity is still being shaped through experimentation, uncertainty, and emotional risk.
Working from photographic references and an intuitive painting process, Kallau develops scenes with soft color palettes and subtle visual details. These contrast with the psychological weight of the depicted motifs; tenderness and unease come close together.
