Language, Life, Literature – Berlin’s Persian-speaking Authors

The symposium “PARATAXE XVIII: Language, Life, Literature – Persian-Speaking Authors in Berlin” will take place on May 23, 2026, at the Maschinenhaus in the Kulturbrauerei. The event is dedicated to the literary and cultural perspectives of Persian-speaking authors in Berlin and will feature readings, lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings.

Afshin Javadi Torshizi and Martin Jankowski will open the event, complemented by a film installation by Behrouz Badrouj. This will be followed by several thematic program segments addressing issues of culture, language, and social experience.

A highlight is the panel “Persian Cosmopolis, in which Harun Badakhshi and Kurt Scharf, among others, will discuss cultural interconnections beyond national and religious boundaries. Another program item, the “German-Persian Divan,” will explore linguistic and literary connections between Indo-European language areas, with the participation of Ali Abdollahi and Mahmoud Hosseini Zad.

Under the title “GastgeBerlin,” topics such as memory, migration, and contemporary experiences will then be addressed, featuring Farhad Babaei and Shahzoda Samarqandi, among others.

The event concludes with a bilingual evening reading featuring Fariba Vafi, Afshin Javadi Torshizi, and Bahram Moradi.

The symposium will be conducted primarily in German; some presentations will also be in Persian and will be partially interpreted.
