Early in his career, South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim has consistently captivated audiences with his interpretation of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 4—because he draws an unusual richness of expressive nuances from this epic, exuberant work.

For his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, he will perform the piece under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä. Mäkelä will also conduct Jean Sibelius’s last completed symphony: a dark, archaic work that—in Mäkelä’s words—“is held together by a single, sweeping breath.”

The program opens with a new work by Thomas Larcher, one of Austria’s most significant composers.
