With his Second Piano Concerto, Sergei Prokofiev created a work brimming with archaic power, fiery energy, and mystical moments—and at the same time, one of the most challenging compositions in the genre.

An ideal setting for pianist Seong-Jin Cho, who combines virtuosity and subtlety in his playing. Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra is equally powerful and forward-driving, featuring echoes of Masurian folk music.

At the podium: the young Chinese conductor Elim Chan, making her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in these concerts. To open the program, she presents Sofia Gubaidulina’s humorous fairy-tale poem.
