“Mysticism of nature and world-weariness!”—With these words, Jean Sibelius captures the essence of his Fifth Symphony, a work brimming with boldness, radiance, and majesty.
Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo conducts his compatriot’s work and pairs it with Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto—dark and somber, yet combative, it foreshadows the horrors of World War II. The soloist is Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang.
The program opens with a world premiere: In *Phantoms*, Composer in Residence Brett Dean takes the audience on a wild journey through the dazzling timbres of the instrumental sections.
