Lecture Series: Art History of the Tiergarten District

Rise, Glory, and Fall: Stories of the Buildings on Tiergartenstraße.

The old Tiergarten district, largely destroyed during World War II, was one of the most prestigious addresses in Berlin, a fact reflected in its architecture. Berlin’s most renowned architectural firms were active here, and the district’s character was constantly evolving due to numerous renovations and new constructions. The result was an intriguing mix of buildings ranging from historicist to modern styles, which have been documented to varying degrees.

Alexander Darda has researched the neighborhood’s architectural history and will present his findings in the form of “house stories” during his lecture. He will also discuss selected residents and their fates.

Speaker: Dipl. Ing. Alexander Darda studied landscape and open-space planning and works as an urban researcher and city guide. For the past ten years, he has been researching the history of the Großer Tiergarten and the surrounding neighborhoods, currently supported by a grant from the Association in Memory of Johanna and Eduard Arnhold e.V.
