With Prof. Dr. Matthias Wemhoff and Gisela Graichen

Genius, barbarian, and world conqueror: The Mongol ruler Genghis Khan (c. 1162–1227) founded the largest land empire in history.

With brutal severity, he united the warring Mongol tribes, enforced written laws applicable to all, connected China and Europe through his conquests, and thus paved the way for the success of the Silk Road. Under his descendants, Mongol cavalry armies advanced as far as Vienna and came within striking distance of Berlin.

But who was the most powerful ruler who ever walked the earth? What do we know today about him and his descendants, and about the archaeology of that era in Mongolia?

In their book “Genghis Khan,” Gisela Graichen and Matthias Wemhoff set out to uncover the history behind the myth.

At the book launch, they will discuss the Mongolian century that changed the world in conversation with Tomas Fitzel. Drawing on new archaeological discoveries, they will recount the developments during the time of this statesman, who was as brilliant as he was ruthless.

The event offers a preview of the major special exhibition at Berlin’s Museum of Prehistory and Early History, “Genghis Khan and the World of the Mongols,” which will be on view at the James Simon Gallery starting October 21, 2026.
