JazzNights Special

A transcontinental phenomenon: the “JazzNights Special” featuring the bands of the multi-award-winning American flutist Jamie Baum and the German pianist Anke Helfrich—“one of the leading figures of German jazz, a pioneer” (NDR)—will live up to the high expectations.

These two outstanding leaders and their top-tier ensembles not only embody improvisational and compositional excellence, diversity, and variety—along with all the qualities that make jazz so exciting, especially today—but they are also, above all, powerful female voices in a music world that remains male-dominated, even beyond their instruments.

Taking different musical paths, the two bands explore the question “What Times Are These”—the title of Jamie Baum’s seventh album—and, at the end of the concert evening, arrive together at an inspiring conclusion that is also found in the title of Helfrich’s current work and strengthens and encourages us all: We’ll Rise, roughly: “things are looking up.”

Support: Judith Owen Septet

Judith Owen is managed by Pat Rains (who has worked with Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford, David Sanborn, among others) and has most recently performed on international stages in the UK, Spain, and France. With the first single from her new album, which is now being released worldwide, she offers a preview of her current program. This summer, she will also be on stage in London for the musical “Hoover.” In the fall, she will come to Germany with her band for select concerts.
