City Walk as Part of the Long Week of Neighborhood History - Street History(ies)
The guided tour with Trille Schünke-Bettinger brings this resistance to life and makes it tangible. She tells the story of the Jewish sisters Alice and Hella Hirsch, who lived in the Scheunenviertel and were part of one of the largest Jewish resistance groups during the Nazi era. She tells the story of Margot Beck, who went into hiding nearby starting in 1943 and was active in the Jewish resistance group Chug Chaluzi alongside her brother Gad Beck. And of many others whose names have left hardly a trace in the cityscape.
The tour explores not only the people but also the places: Which streets, houses, and squares are the settings of this story—and how do we commemorate them today?
- The event is part of the Long Week of Neighborhood History under the theme "Street History(ies)."
