Competing memories and conflicts of representation in memorial site work on Nazi crimes
Moderator: Cornelia Siebeck
Work at memorial sites dedicated to Nazi crimes has always been entangled with competing memories and conflicts of representation: Which stories of persecution are made visible in the site’s design, and which remain marginalized or invisible?
The panel discussion will address the following questions, among others: Is there a “hierarchy of victims,” and what space is given to perpetrators? How do Nazi crimes relate to other historical injustices? Where do such competing memories and conflicts of representation actually come from, what are the driving forces here, what role do they play in the concrete work on site—and can they ever be “resolved” to everyone’s satisfaction?
