On April 23, 1946, the first issue of the daily newspaper *Neues Deutschland* was published. In the spring of 1972, the editorial staff, the publishing house, and the independent printing center moved into the newly constructed building complex on Franz-Mehring-Platz.

From then on, *Neues Deutschland* was produced, printed, and distributed from what was at the time Europe’s largest press complex.

It was the social upheavals of 1989–1990 that fundamentally transformed the conditions under which the newspaper, the publishing house, and their employees operated.

To mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of `Neues Deutschland`, Wolfgang Spickermann (appointed editor-in-chief in December 1989 and managing director of ND GmbH until 2004) and Wolfgang Hübner (an ND journalist since 1985 and later editor-in-chief) together with Gesine Lötzsch (moderator) about the newspaper and the building on Franz-Mehring-Platz in times of upheaval.

The event takes place as part of the book presentation on the history of the square.
