On May 17, the Nikolaikirche Museum will celebrate International Museum Day. Located in the heart of the Nikolaiviertel, the museum invites visitors to explore its exhibitions with free admission.

Discover eight hundred years of history and culture! Berlin’s oldest surviving church building has shaped the Nikolaiviertel and the center of Berlin since the Middle Ages: once a place of worship, now a museum of church, architectural, and urban history. Of particular interest to families is the model of the medieval twin cities of Berlin and Cölln. Here, children and adults can explore together which buildings from that era still exist and what the area looks like today.

An audio guide for families leads visitors through the museum with exciting stories in German. Especially for children, there is a museum scavenger hunt illustrated by Berlin-based comic artist Mawil, available in German, English, Turkish, Polish, and Arabic.

The two new exhibition projects, “Fighting Over Stones?!” and “Who Ruled the City?”, serve as interventions within the permanent exhibition at the Nikolaikirche Museum. In different ways, they address the question: What does it mean to exhibit history in a building that itself holds so much history?

Info:

International Museum Day will take place for the 49th time in 2026. Annually designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for May 18, it will be celebrated in Germany this year on the third Sunday of the month. The aim of this event is to draw attention to museums and invite people to discover their diversity.
