Vangelis created soundscapes that resonate far beyond the realm of film. His compositions blend electronic timbres with symphonic power, creating musical images of extraordinary intensity.
With monumental film music, a large symphony orchestra, and impressive large-screen projections, Beyond the Horizon – The Sounds of Vangelis becomes an atmospheric tribute to the visionary work of the Greek composer.
The evening centers on iconic compositions from world-famous films such as 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, Alexander, The Bounty, and Bitter Moon, as well as collaborative compositions with Montserrat Caballé, including “March with Me.”
In particular, the world-famous theme “Conquest of Paradise” remains one of the most powerful musical anthems in film history and is regarded as a symbol of courage, discovery, and human exploration.
Under the musical direction of Gast Waltzing, the renowned Czech National Symphony Orchestra (CSNO) performs Vangelis’s works, while impressive visual projections capture the musical imagery and draw the audience deep into the emotional soundscapes of his compositions.
Vangelis: A Genius of Musical Imagery
Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, is one of the most significant composers of the 20th century. His music is an integral part of film history.
He won an Oscar for the film score to “Chariots of Fire.” In addition, he created the iconic futuristic soundtrack for Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, as well as memorable music for the historical epic Alexander, the psychological drama Bitter Moon (directed by Roman Polanski), and the adventure film The Bounty, starring Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Liam Neeson.
The music of these films is unmistakable—emotional, visually striking, and deeply human.
An evening of cinematic sound art
The concert “Beyond the Horizon – The Sounds of VANGELIS” is far more than a tribute to his work—it is an impressive total experience for all fans of film music. The combination of powerful orchestral richness, excellent musical direction, an outstanding vocal soloist, and visually stunning projections creates an atmosphere that gets under your skin. A concert that stirs emotions and lingers in the memory.
About the Orchestra
The CSNO looks back on a history spanning over 30 years and enjoys an excellent reputation throughout Europe. From classical concerts with a large symphony orchestra to film music, musicals, and jazz—the CSNO impresses with the versatility and genre-spanning musicality of all its musicians.
Since its founding in 1993 by trumpeter Jan Hasenörhl—who remains part of the ensemble today as its manager—and conductor Zdeněk Košler, the orchestra has grown steadily, expanding beyond the borders of the Czech Republic to reach audiences worldwide. The CNSO gained international recognition, among other things, through its collaboration with film music legend Ennio Morricone, with whom they recorded several studio albums and toured.
About Gast Waltzing
Gast Waltzing has composed music for over 200 film and television productions, worked with artists such as the Scorpions, Amy Macdonald, and Gregory Porter, and won a Grammy in 2016 for an album with Angélique Kidjo.
In addition to his artistic work, he served as a professor and founded the jazz department at the Luxembourg Conservatory. He regularly collaborates with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and conducts internationally renowned orchestras.
In recent years, he has worked with numerous symphony orchestras worldwide (including the Scottish Royal National Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Prague National Orchestra, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the Orchestre Lamoureux, and others)—as a conductor, arranger, and with his own compositions—and had the honor of conducting at the Vienna Musikverein.
More recently, he has developed innovative projects, such as with Kyle Eastwood, in which he has rearranged film music for jazz ensembles and symphony orchestras. His particular strength lies in combining different musical styles and artists to create new, creative soundscapes.
