Some 40,000 manuscript pages by 100 authors are stored in the Archive of Suppressed Literature of the GDR, compiled by Ines Geipel and Joachim Walther. In collaboration with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, we set out to discover literary works that were written in East Berlin but were not permitted to be published until the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Prose, poetry, and fragments—the texts, written from the 1950s through reunification, are as diverse as the fates of the writers themselves.
