Knowledge and work of the Prussian court gardeners
Throughout history, gardens have served to represent their owners, whose names are often closely associated with the gardens. In contrast, the gardeners involved in their design and maintenance are generally less well known to the public. It was precisely their comprehensive knowledge in all areas of horticulture and garden art that made it possible to bring the dream of paradise closer through the concept of the garden, its artistic design, and its furnishings.
The Glienicke Court Gardener Museum is therefore dedicated to the profession of the court gardener and the range of his practical and theoretical activities. Documents and exhibits from the court gardeners’ personal collections illustrate the various facets of horticultural work—from drafting plans and surveying to flower cultivation—describe training paths and career opportunities, and highlight their elevated social status.
The “Gallery of Prussian Court Gardeners” provides an overview of biographies and works through a collection of portraits and illustrations.
In the Garden Hall of Glienicke Palace, 18th- and 19th-century vedute convey a vivid impression of the landscape during the court gardeners’ lifetimes.
