Native Americans in the GDR?

At first, the state struggled with the theme of the Wild West, but starting in 1985, a new exhibition was even opened at the Karl May Museum in Radebeul near Dresden.

Solidarity with Native Americans came more easily, as evidenced by the Native American films often produced by the GDR featuring the actor Gojko Mitic. They also inspired Wolfgang Kring to launch his own “Apache Live Stunt Show” and, with homemade props and plenty of action, continue to thrill his audience in Mecklenburg to this day.

The highlight of the evening is the documentary “Dreamcatcher” by Andreas Höntsch about the life story of Wolfgang Kring. It shows that in the teepee, great freedom could be experienced on a small scale.

Film and discussion: Wolfgang Kring, Native American actor, Neu Damerow near Plau am See; Andreas Höntsch, filmmaker, Neu Nantrow near Wismar

Moderator: Sören Marotz, Exhibition Director, DDR Museum
