To mark International Children’s Day on June 1, the Humanist Association of Germany will screen the documentary “Im Prinzip Familie,” followed by a discussion with director Daniel Abma and Britta Licht, the Humanist Association of Germany’s Federal Commissioner for Children’s Rights.

A house by the lake, a cat purring in the sun, five children sitting at the dining table. But at their side are not their parents, but the caregivers of the youth welfare residential group where they live. For reasons the film deliberately does not focus on, the children cannot grow up with their families. Instead, the documentary follows their daily lives as they navigate the youth welfare office, school, and their quest to find stability and security.

Over the course of several years, Daniel Abma followed the residential group in a rural area. The result is a sensitive documentary about responsibility, care, and the importance of reliable relationships. “Im Prinzip Familie” highlights the immense emotional labor involved in child and youth welfare and the role that the professionals working there play in the children’s lives.
