Marianne Werefkin Prize 2022

The Marianne Werefkin Prize is named after the famous avant-garde and expressionist Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938). The exhibition of selected works by the nominated female artists and the award ceremony will be hosted by Galerie Pankow for the second time in 2022. This supports an important initiative to promote and make visible professional women artists in Berlin.

The nominated and exhibiting artists this year are: Valérie Favre, FRANEK, Stella Geppert, Kerstin Grimm, Irène Hug, Sarah Loibl, Britta Lumer, Funda Özgünaydin and Angela Zohlen. The exhibition represents a range of artistic positions and means of expression.

This year's award winner is Kerstin Grimm. Kerstin Grimm (born 1956 in Oranienburg, lives and works in Berlin) creates worlds in her drawing collages - consisting of several layers of painted paper and partly covered with transparent paper - that seem grotesque and intimate at the same time.

The artist's stage-like productions are peppered with allusions to traditional fairy tales and modern myths. They weave a web of surreal entanglements and associative relationships that are frightening, intimidating, beautiful or eerie, depending on the reading.

Kerstin Grimm studied German language and literature at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1974 to 1980 and followed this up with two years of evening studies at the Berlin Academy of Art, which paved her way into art. Kerstin Grimm was a lecturer in drawing at HAW Hamburg in 2010 and in sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee in 2011.
