An exhibition at the original location in the Europa Center
The display windows of the exhibition entice visitors with a Charleston dance class video and a glimpse into the surroundings of the Gedächtniskirche—then and now. Visitors to the exhibition can take a seat at an original table with chairs as if they were sitting on the terrace of the Romanesque Café.
At the center of the exhibition, visitors can immerse themselves in the Romanesque Café as an experiential space. With contemporary depictions of the café and its guests in paintings, graphics, press, literature and music, the café comes to life as a center of attraction for the cultural avant-garde of the 1920s. Some of the exhibits are being presented to the public for the first time.
The numerous stores, cinemas, theaters and (dance) venues in the area are located on a large city map and illustrated with many historical photographs. The multi-layered hustle and bustle "Bei uns um die Gedächtniskirche rum...", the title of a revue by Friedrich Hollaender, is brought to life with the help of many quotes, pictures and informative texts.
The rooms of the Romanesque Café can be visited in virtual reality, reconstructed in 3D using old building plans and photographs. With spectacular finds of visual material and press articles about the many personalities associated with the Romanesque Café, a colorful kaleidoscope is created about this hotspot of history.
