Über den 20. Juli 1944, meine Eltern und persönliche Verantwortung heute

In light of the threat to democracy posed by racism and xenophobia, actor Matthias Brandt commemorates the courage of the resistance fighters against the Nazi regime, among whom were his parents.

In 2025, Matthias Brandt delivered a memorable speech at the Berlin-Plötzensee Memorial Center, commemorating the resistance fighters of July 20, 1944 – the site where many of those involved in the assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler were executed.

As the son of the emigrant and later Chancellor Willy Brandt and his wife Rut, Matthias Brandt used this speech as an opportunity to reflect, from today's perspective, on the courage and motives of the conspirators of July 20 and many other resistance fighters, and also to examine his own role in drawing necessary conclusions from history. The decisive factor for Matthias Brandt in writing this book, based on his speech, was the alarming resurgence of right-wing extremism and the electoral successes of the AfD (Alternative for Germany).

In conversation with publisher Helge Malchow, Matthias Brandt presents his new book in the main hall.
