Artist tour & talk with Charlotte Ming & Stefan Zollhauser

As part of the finissage of Currents – Traces of Colonial Past at the Dahlem Research Campus, artist and journalist Charlotte Ming leads an artist tour of the three-part installation created by her and Yangkun Shi.

Bringing together photography, video, writing, and archival materials, "Currents" examines the legacies of German colonialism in China and how this history remains inscribed in urban spaces and continues to shape migration experiences.

During the tour, Ming offers insights into the three-part installation, provides historical context, and connects the exhibition to the surrounding street names Takustraße, Lansstraße, and Iltisstraße, whose origins are tied to the Eight-Nation Alliance’s suppression of the Boxer Uprising.

Historian Stefan Zollhauser presents new research on accounts by German soldiers returning from the Boxer War, including materials related to the ship "Iltis", in direct dialogue with the artworks on view. The event will invite attendees to engage with German colonial history in China and the resulting street names, opening up discussions about their future.

The evening will be held in both English and German – with Charlotte Ming speaking in English and Stefan Zollhauser in German.

A concluding get-together will offer the audience an opportunity for exchange and discussion.

An event in cooperation with the Department of Culture Steglitz-Zehlendorf, funded by the Bezirkskulturfonds/Subfund for the Reappraisal of Colonial History.

Admission free.
