Andy Irvine is one of the most influential driving forces in the contemporary Irish folk scene and has made a name for himself as a bouzouki, mandolin, and mandola player. He is one of the great Irish singers; his voice reflects the soul of Ireland.
He is a founding member of the legendary Irish groups Sweeney’s Men and Planxty and has significantly influenced their style. He has played with De Danann and Paul Brady, Patrick Street, Usher’s Island, and Mozaik. He is considered an imaginative arranger who understands how to present traditional material in a new and fresh way and is an excellent composer with a very special rhythmic ability.
His bouzouki and mandolin also incorporate Bulgarian rhythms and Romanian time signatures, glance towards Macedonia and Albania, and underpin his smooth, sophisticated vocals with rapid shifts, which never lose their Irish diction. In this age of high-tech and materialism, his concerts are particularly impressive. His songs are stories of the politically persecuted, of emigrants, of working-class heroes, and of his experiences as a traveling singer who has performed almost all over the world.
Andy Irvine, now 83 years old, is a legend of the Irish folk scene. In 2018, he received the Folk Award for Lifetime Achievement from RTE Radio.
