Shamanism is a widely acclaimed free jazz ensemble that combines contemporary improvisation with elements of Korean shamanistic rituals. Led by South Korean saxophonist and improviser Jung-Jae Kim, the group creates immersive performances in which cultural storytelling merges with boundary-crossing sonic exploration and striking visual narratives.
The visual dimension, also designed by Jung-Jae Kim, presents a ritual-like journey through moving imagery that reflects the fluidity and elasticity of water. These visuals are closely interwoven with the music: they respond to the ensemble’s sonic textures, rhythms, and improvisational energy, amplifying them and creating a cohesive, multisensory experience.
The album “Kim Jung Jae – Shamanism” (2025) was selected by JazzTimes as one of the Top 10 releases of 2025.
