Concert of the Moabiter Kantorei

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., sacred music by Carl Loewe and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy will be performed at St. John's Church in Moabit. The centerpiece of the evening will be the rarely performed oratorio "The Raising of Lazarus," Op. 132, by Carl Loewe, who is primarily known as a composer of ballads.

The work depicts the raising of Lazarus as a pivotal turning point in the ministry of Jesus—both the culmination of his public ministry and a premonition of his final journey to Jerusalem. The program will be complemented by Mendelssohn's chorale cantatas "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" and "Christ, Thou Lamb of God," in which traditional chorale forms are combined with a Romantic musical language. Mendelssohn himself wrote of one of these cantatas: "I look forward to the piece, of which no one will know whether it is in C minor or E-flat major."
